Background, Profile And Area Of IT Involved
It was in 1997 that the Singapore government first mooted the idea of a third university for Singapore. Then Deputy Prime Minister Dr Tony Tan believed that the new university should be different from the two established institutions - the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU). The government wanted Singapore Management University, SMU, to be an experiment in diversity. The experiment began with the choice of the Chairman of the new institution, Mr Ho Kwon Ping, a renowned and successful business entrepreneur. He was joined by an SMU task force of academics, including Professor Tan Chin Tiong, who determined that SMU should be an American-style university offering a broad-based education, in contrast to Singapore's tradition of the more specialised British model.
SMU has a total of 6 different schools being, school of accountancy, business, economics, information system, law and social science. The school of information system, SIS, is the main area of IT where SMU is involved in. Established in 2003, SIS is a dynamic school that is constantly seeking to lift student’s education and research to a higher level. SIS take pride in their students, as they see them learning and maturing in SMU’s transformative environment and going on to establish fulfilling careers and contribute back to society. |
SMU Impact On Me
On 4th July, Thursday, we went to SMU’s school of information system to attend a talk held by Ms Lynette. The talk was on why we should join SMU and the benefits we gain from joining SMU. She briefed us on how SMU is known for their world-class research as well as their distinct teaching. During the talk, I noticed that she was focused on trying to explain to us that SMU is not a school where academic grade matters the most and that continuous studying is the way to go. She tried to emphasize that students who work hard should play hard as well and that despite the competitive landscape of schools in recent years, SMU provides their students with time to play and rest. An example that she gave was an overseas internship where students can take this chance to go aboard and learn a new culture. She then went on to explain how SMU ensure that each class does not exceed the amount of 45 students as they want to foster the relationship between lecturers and students. She explained that this method of teaching benefits the students more as they are able to get the lecturers attention easily in a smaller class as compared to in a lecture hall with 100 over students. After hearing about this point, I was convinced that SMU is a school that I would definitely consider going after finishing my diploma. SMU shows that they are concern and aware of their students’ needs and wants. Thus, SMU takes care of their students well and hence convinced me that SMU is a school I want to go to.
The second part of the talk was held by Mr Hady W. LAUW, that explained to us how the Hungarian Algorithm works and the reason why we should join the Computer Science course. I wasn’t very interested in this part of the talk as I was sure that I didn’t want to pursue Computer Science in the future after I am done with my diploma.
After the talk ended, we were then brought on a tour around the school by the student councils. They took us to different facilities in the school such as the food court and library. The student councils shared with us their personal experience on what it is like studying in SMU and also gave us helpful tips and advices on what to do in class. They then went on to brief us about the co-curriculum activities that were available in SMU.

SMU Course Suitable For Me
One course that caught my eye in SMU would be the Information System Major course offered by the school of information system. The Information Systems (IS) major course would equip students with the capabilities to create value for business and society by developing innovative IT solutions. It gives students the flexibility to acquire either deep technical skills or a healthy balance of technical and business skills. Under this course, there are 3 major tracks being the business analytics, digital business solution and financial technology. I am most interested in the financial technology track as it covers the foundations of enterprise architecture in banking and the functional domain areas such as retail and corporate banking, digital payments and innovations, and financial markets. As of now, Singapore is one of the top 5 financial centers in the world and financial technology professionals are in high demand in the traditional banking sector and in non-bank alternative FinTech companies. Hence being interested in both the banking side of things as well as the technology side of things, this course would be best suited for me. I do have the current skill set that suit the course as well since I am currently studying for a diploma in Financial Informatics. Financial Informatics course has taught be on the different enterprise information system used by the bank, the accounting and economic side of the banks daily job, the technology side of things such as programming language of C# and Python and many more. Hence, I am well equipped with the skill set suitable for this course.
