25 October 2018 (DSS Visit)
On 25th October 2018, a group of students, including me, from Ngee Ann Polytechnic went to visit the students at Delta Senior School (DSS). We went there to learnt more about their daily activities in school and to interact with them. When we first arrived, the teacher at DSS gave us an introduction to the history of the school and the education path which the students in DSS took. Followed by a tour around the school and us participating in their Co-Curricular activities (CCA), IT club. Deuel and I were paired up with a student name Dian and we interacted with her through this period. We found out more about her during this period and how she was coping in school. Other than just interacting, we also created a program together using “Scratch”.
17 November 2018 (NP Visit)
On 17th November 2018, the DSS students came to visit Ngee Ann Polytechnic. We gave them a warm welcome at the school’s gate and brought them to our computer rooms. We taught them how to use “Adobe Spark” to create a video that included all of our memories shared during the 2 visits at DSS and NP. The main purpose of teaching them “Adobe Spark” was so that they would learn a skill that might come in handy in the future. At the end of the visit, the DSS students were able to view and bring back the videos that they have created. Through these 2 visits, I learnt that we should not outcast any person because of their special needs. If everyone chose not to understand them or not to give them a chance, then they would be left out from the society. We should instead be more compassionate and take the time to understand them and help them. In conclusion, servicing learning had changed my mindset towards people with special needs, making me more compassionate and more willing to help those in need. This is all to make the society a better place.
